A Brief History of Usui Reiki
It was through a journey within in March of 1922, that Mikao Usui developed the Usui Reiki Healing System, or “Usui Reiki”.
Mikao Usui was born into a wealthy family on August 15th, 1865 in the Village of Taniai, Miyama-Cho, near the present day Nagoya in Japan. Mikao grew up with a well-rounded education and learned swordsmanship, martial arts and Kiko. Throughout his childhood and into adulthood, Mikao always had an interesting in healing medicine, which eventually ignited his search for a healing modality that is accessible to all. Mikao traveled throughout his adult life and held many job titles such as journalist, secretary, missionary and public servant; he eventually became a Buddhist monk and lived in a monastery.
In March of 1922, Mikao climbed Mt. Kurama for a 21 day retreat in search for further spiritual knowledge and self-discovery. For the entire 21 days, Mikao meditated and fasted, which lead to a profoundly transformative spiritual awakening. Mikao describes a great white light entering through the top of his head, filling his entire being, and attuning him to a new energy life force; an energy force he decided to call “Reiki”.
